Cambridge Centre for Data Driven Discovery, University of Cambridge

The Cambridge Centre for Data-Driven Discovery (C2D3) brings together researchers and expertise from across the academic departments and industry to drive research into the analysis, understanding and use of data science.

Our research spans all six Schools of the University, from the underlying fundamentals in mathematics and computer science, to applications ranging from astronomy and bioinformatics, to medicine, social science and the humanities

In parallel, our research addresses important issues around law, ethics and economics, in order to apply Big Data to solve challenging problems for society.

Cambridge Big Data supports collaboration and knowledge transfer in this growing field.

Research Overview

Modern technology allows for the collection of immense volumes of data. The challenge of converting these data into useful and actionable information is an activity known as data science, or “Big Data”.

The datasets that research now handles are not only large, but complex, containing unstructured, heterogeneous data, human language, image and video, and completely new approaches are required to handle them. From physics to the life sciences, from image analysis to social networks,  the challenges in managing and analysing large and high-dimensional datasets require increasingly interdisciplinary work.

Cambridge Big Data addresses this multidisciplinary research challenge by bringing together expertise from across the University, both in the applications of Big Data and in underpinning technologies and concepts. Cambridge Big Data represents research in over 50 departments.

Our cross-disciplinary activities are organised around five cross-cutting themes:

We identify, on an ongoing basis, emerging challenges and project areas which cut across discipline boundaries and create new opportunities to address these broad and important questions.
